Maximalist Apartment Living

Maximalist Living for Ultimate Comfort

If you’re tired of pared-down, bare-bones decorating, you’re in luck. A hot trend in decorating is maximalism. Think in terms of the lush drapery, overstuffed chairs, floral patterns, knick-knacks, and opulent lighting found in pages from the history books of Victorian palaces and stately British homes. This trend emerged from the pandemic when sheltering in place meant enveloping yourself in pure comfort and where keeping your possessions close by felt reassuring. It means that “more is more” is warmly embraced.

Here are some ideas for creating a maximalist cocoon in your apartment.

Florals

You probably can’t install wallpaper in your apartment, but you can find stick-on decals that mimic wallpaper and can be easily removed. Choose oversized floral patterns in vivid colors for your walls, soft furnishings, and bedroom décor.

Mixed patterns and textures

Throw some stripes, plaids, chevrons, or animal prints into the mix. Try layering area rugs, throws, and pillows to create an aura of comfort and luxury. Combine lush velvet, glossy satin, and cozy corduroy to add interest and dimension.

Cohesive color scheme

Choose your favorite colors — jewel tones, pastels, or vivid brights — and carry tonal variations of this theme throughout your apartment. For example, use variegated shades of burgundy, pink, and fuchsia in your living room, emerald in the bathroom, and hues of calming blues in the bedroom.

Wall art

This is the time to display every photo you’ve taken and prints you’ve acquired. Frame them and display them on every wall. Scour flea markets and online shops for one-of-a-kind frames that will make a statement.

Knick-knacks

Take all of your collectibles and create displays wherever you can find space. Organize like pieces to avoid a messy, cluttered feel. You can create a tabletop display with beautiful vases; use another spot for a collection of teacups or anything you collect.

Lighting

If you need tabletop or floor lamps, choose fixtures that mimic candelabra or chandeliers. Or pick up a vintage floor lamp with a unique fabric shade. (Make sure it can be safely operated and that a fabric shade is treated with a flame retardant before you buy it!)

Bedroom

Transform your bedroom into a cozy cocoon you can retreat to. Shroud your bed with duvets, comforters, and blankets in lush fabrics that reflect your color scheme. And don’t skimp on the pillows.

For those who love collecting objects and surrounding themselves with opulence, the maximalist decorating trend is for you. Use your imagination and creativity, as many maximalist design elements are definitely DIY. Just make sure to edit yourself. Maximalist design can very easily shift into disorganized clutter if you’re not careful. That’s why the design world has dubbed this trend “curated chaos.” Have fun with it!
