Studio vs. One-Bedroom: Which Suits Your Lifestyle?

A woman unpacks boxes in a living room.

If it’s your first apartment or you’re downsizing to a smaller space, you may wonder if you should settle on a one-bedroom apartment or a studio apartment. In a studio apartment, you have one main living space that serves as the living room and bedroom. You’ll have a separate (small) kitchen and bathroom, and maybe one closet. With a one-bedroom apartment, you’ll typically have a kitchen, one bathroom, a living-dining area, and a separate bedroom. Most one-bedroom apartments will have a bedroom closet and another closet in the main living area.

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, and you need to weigh the differences to figure out which type of apartment works best for you. If you are rarely home, don’t entertain much, and live alone, a studio may be a perfect fit. On the other hand, if you work from home, have a spouse or partner, and like to have people over, a one-bedroom apartment is a better option. To help you decide, we’ve listed some of the pros and cons of each type of floor plan.

Studio Apartments

Pros

  •         Cheaper rent and utilities than a one-bedroom apartment
  •         Easier to clean
  •         Requires less furniture

Cons

  •         Limited or no storage options
  •         Lack of privacy, especially if you live with a spouse or partner
  •         Crowded and cramped for entertaining

One-bedroom apartments

Pros

  •         More space and privacy
  •         Better storage
  •         Guest-friendly atmosphere
  •         Multiple rooms offer better noise control (sounds counterintuitive, but it’s true)

Cons

  •         Higher rent and utilities
  •         More space to clean
  •         Requires more furniture

When deciding between a studio and a one-bedroom apartment, you’ll first need to consider your budget. Next, examine your lifestyle and see if you truly can thrive in the confined space of a studio apartment. If you’re single, work in an office, travel frequently, and have an active social life, a low-maintenance studio apartment may be the right fit. However, if you crave solitude but need some space to spread out, live with another person, or work at home, you’ll fare better in a one-bedroom apartment. You can always try a studio apartment, and if you don’t like it, you can transfer to a one-bedroom. With careful planning and perhaps some trial and error, you’ll land on a comfortable apartment that fits your lifestyle and fits your budget.
