Apartment Safety Tips

Apartment safety tips

When looking at apartments, it’s important to look beyond that floor plan and amenities and check out the security. You may be considering a property with a locked gate, touch-key entry, or coded security system, but that doesn’t cover all the bases. Here are some areas you need to consider when evaluating the safety of an apartment you are considering.

Check the Doors

Make sure they close and lock security. If there isn’t a deadbolt, ask the property manager if one can be added. You can also add a chain lock or get a club to install beneath your doorknob. Does the front door have a peephole?

Check the Windows

Again, make sure the window and the screen close securely and that you can lock the window. If you have a balcony or patio with a sliding glass door, get a bar that you can slide in the bottom of the door frame to prevent the door from being pried open from the outside.

Check the Security Doors

Make sure that they close completely and lock behind you. Check to see who all has access to security doors. Entry should be restricted to residents, maintenance, and property management.

Locate Fire Exits

Make sure you know where the fire exits and fire extinguishers are located. The fire extinguishers should have a tag that indicates they have been inspected in the current year and have an expiration date.

Check Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

They should be functional and have new batteries. Ask whether you or the maintenance department are responsible for changing the batteries in the detectors.

Look at the Outside Lighting

Are there floodlights on the outside of the building? Is there adequate lighting around the property? Check out the parking lot as well. Is it well-lit? Would you feel safe arriving home after dark? Plan to drive to the property after dark and see the lighting for yourself.

Renters Insurance

To further protect yourself in case your apartment is burglarized, or there is a fire or weather disaster, you are protected. Most property management companies require residents to carry renters insurance.

Your safety and security should be top of mind for your future landlord. If anything feels “off” about the property or the property manager has vague answers or seems reluctant to address your security concerns, look elsewhere. You will land on an apartment community that will value you as a resident and have the appropriate measures in place to secure your safety.
