Packing Tips for Moving

Packing tips for moving

Moving to a new apartment is exciting. That is … until it’s time to start packing. “I love moving,” said no one ever. It’s true. There is no way to make moving a pleasant experience and oftentimes, it keeps people firmly rooted where they are, whether they are enjoying their apartment or not. With some careful planning and organization, you can remove some of the pain points from moving and keep the positive momentum going when the time finally comes to relocate.  Of course, one solution is to hire a professional moving company, but if that’s not in your budget, here are a few tips to help your move be less cumbersome.

Declutter

Before you start packing, go through your apartment and gather everything that you no longer need, wear, or use. You don’t need Marie Kondo to tell you how to do this! You either need to donate, sell, or discard your unworn and unused items. If you haven’t worn a garment for more than a year, you probably won’t wear it in your new apartment. The same goes for trendy kitchen gadgets you used once or twice or an electronic device that is now obsolete.

Assemble Moving Supplies

Before you begin, stock up on boxes, tape, labels, bubble wrap, Sharpies, and anything else you will need. Towels are great for wrapping fragile items. You can also pick up free copies of community newspapers from local merchants and use those as packing materials. You can also order inexpensive foam sleeves online for packing dishes, glasses, and other fragile items.

Pack Room by Room

Packing by room will make it easier to unpack when you get to your new apartment. Just label the boxes accordingly. You can take this a step further by listing the contents on the outside of the boxes. This may sound counterintuitive but put heavier items in smaller boxes. That removes the temptation to overpack larger boxes, which will make them hard to lift. And make certain to label boxes with fragile items.

Keep Your Clothes in Dresser Drawers

Instead of emptying your dresser drawers, leave them with the clothing intact. Bubble-wrap the entire dresser, then when it’s in the new apartment, you just cut away the bubble wrap and you’re done. Also, keep clothes on their hangers when you remove them from the closet.

Use Luggage to Transport Items

Your rolling suitcases are great for moving items like books. It saves on boxes, and you’ll have the extra mobility of the suitcase wheels.

Pack an “open first” Box

This box will include toiletries, medication, chargers, a box cutter, trash bags, bottled water, snacks, etc. In other words, you’ll have all the essentials you’ll need to start unpacking.
