Tips for Getting to know Neighbors
Living in an apartment comes with many advantages, including a built-in network of neighbors. However, you can be surrounded by people yet still feel alone. You might know your immediate neighbors who live next door or across the hall, but how do you foster a true sense of community? Want to get to know that friendly person you chat with at the fitness center or nod to at the dog park? Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of initiative. Some people are natural extroverts and have no problem striking up a conversation with strangers or throwing a party at the clubhouse, but other neighbors may be a bit more reserved and guarded. Even if you’re a bit introverted and on the shy side yourself, you can make an attempt to develop a stronger sense of community at your apartment complex. Start slowly.
Start with “Hello”
Simply smiling and saying “hello” to a neighbor you regularly see at the mailboxes or in the elevator can be an icebreaker. Maybe they have been wanting to speak to you but are reticent. If you are new to the complex, you can ask the person a question about an amenity, process, or even if there are any social events held at the property.
Use Social Media
Does your apartment community have a Facebook group or presence on another social media platform? You can engage with your neighbors there. It’s a great opportunity to get to know people before actually meeting them in person.
Participate in Social Events
If your apartment complex has a clubhouse, you can be reasonably sure that it hosts regular social events for residents. Maybe there is a potluck dinner or wine tasting scheduled. Or, it could be a gathering spot to cheer on your favorite team on Sundays. Don’t laugh or quickly dismiss the idea, but residents of all ages occasionally enjoy an old-fashioned Bingo game.
Host an Event in Your Apartment
If you prefer smaller groups, post a notice to invite like-minded residents to your apartment for an informal event. Book clubs are popular, as well as game nights. Once you start hosting events, you may encourage your neighbors to reciprocate. Walking and fitness groups, along with pet owner groups, are also popular.
Think Bigger
If you want to cast a wider net, host a big event at the clubhouse. You choose the theme. Themed potlucks are fun, such as an international night. Each guest can bring a dish that reflects their culture or heritage. It’s a great way to get to learn more in-depth about your neighbors and expand your palate.
In order to meet your neighbors and make new friends at your apartment community, it’s important to be a good neighbor. Be friendly and approachable (obviously using common sense) and greet people with a smile and “hello.” Welcome new neighbors to the property. Follow the rules of the property and your lease. Lend a hand if you see somebody struggling to open the door while balancing bags of groceries. Keep your apartment clean and adhere to the noise-level and pet rules. By being open and approachable and acting as the kind of neighbor you’d like to have, you’ll soon build a community of residents to interact with and make apartment living even more enjoyable.
