How to Transfer Utilities When Moving Into a New Apartment

Whether you’re just going across town or to a completely different state, moving into a new apartment can be exciting. But it’s easy to overlook some of the finer details in all of the flurry of organizing and packing. One task that needs to top your to-do list is dealing with your utilities and determining whether you need to transfer or change them. The last thing you need is to get ready to spend the first day in your new apartment only to realize that you don’t have electricity or WiFi. Most renters are responsible for gas, electricity, WiFi, and if you still use cable, your cable provider. Usually, the property management company pays for water, trash, and sewer, but you should double-check your new lease to understand which utilities you’re responsible for.

If you are moving to a new apartment in the same complex or even the same city, you will probably just need to transfer your utilities unless the part of the city you’re relocating to uses different utility providers. That means contacting your utility providers and informing them of the change of service address and giving them a firm date as to when service will terminate in your current apartment and need to be activated at your new place. Giving them 2-4 weeks’ notice should be sufficient.

If you are moving to a new city or part of town that uses different utility providers, then you will need to change your utilities. Your property manager will be able to give you the details on who you need to contact to set up services. In some instances, such as moving to a completely different state or if you have less-than-stellar credit, you may be required to put down a deposit.

Before you move, ask for the final bill for your current residence and pay that off before establishing service at your new address.  You’ll also need to make arrangements to return any equipment such as cable boxes, WiFi routers, etc. If you’ve had to pay deposits for any equipment, request that your deposit be returned or credited to your new account if you are just transferring service.

If you get your utilities squared away before you move, the process will flow smoothly and you will walk into your new apartment, turn on the lights, fire up the WiFi, stock the fridge, and get busy unpacking.
