How to create extra storage space in your apartment
Once you’ve settled into your new apartment, you may discover that you just don’t have enough storage space. That’s not an uncommon problem for apartment dwellers. Some apartment communities have on-site storage, typically in the basement or outdoor units, while in other places, residents are on their own. So, if you find yourself in a situation where you didn’t downsize as thoroughly as you could have liked before moving, here are some tips for creating DIY storage.
Make use of vertical space
This means installing floating shelves and pegboards. Floating shelves in your main living area are great for displaying books, pictures, and other bric-a-brac. You can take advantage of this idea and use the shelves to display your favorite decorative items. Pegboards are practical additions to the kitchen as you can install hooks to hang your cooking utensils and small hand tools. No more digging through the ubiquitous junk drawer to find that spatula or screwdriver. If you are a biker, you can also hang your bike on the wall. It will save wear and tear on the tires and you can also add a hanger for your bike helmet.
Choose a high bed frame or platform with drawers
Never underestimate under-the-bed storage. If your bed frame is high enough off the floor, you can stash plenty of stuff underneath, such as holiday decorations or out-of-season clothing. Cover your bed with a floor-length bedspread or quilt and guests will be none the wiser.
Use bins and baskets to organize
You can pick up bins and baskets that will coordinate with any décor practically anywhere. Stash them in the entryway, laundry room, and bedroom. Bins and baskets are great catch-alls for those items that you just don’t know what to do with. If you are using bins and baskets to store items you use regularly, opt for clear Plexiglas or plastic. That way, you can easily see what you’re looking for.
Optimize your closet
Try hanging clear shoe bags over the closet door. Not only will they save space, but you can see at a glance where your shoes are. No more digging through the dark closet floor to find your missing trainer. You can also use bins and baskets in your closet to organize accessories or clothing that shouldn’t be hung on a hanger, like sweaters. You can also find vertical hangers where you can layer hangers off an existing hanging space on the clothes rod, so you can hang more clothes. All of your similar garments (like trousers) will be hanging together from a single hanger, making it easier to organize your closet. As a bonus, your clothes won’t wrinkle as easily.
These are just a few ideas to create more space in your apartment. One way to keep your apartment tidy is to conduct frequent decluttering sessions. Throw away clothing and items that you no longer use and aren’t in condition to donate or sell. For stuff that could be reused, donate it to charity, or sell it through an online consignment shop. With a little discipline and lots of creativity, you can maximize the space in your apartment and enjoy breathable, clutter-free living.
