Converting a cart into a coffee bar

Designing a coffee bar on a cart

Did you buy into the trend of creating a bar cart for your apartment? Since bar carts have been replaced by beverage centers, what do you do with your cart? Before you haul it off to a thrift shop or post it for sale online, why not embrace a new trend and transform your bar cart into a coffee cart? Coffee carts have roots in the Old West when settlers and cowboys sought out the chuckwagon for sustenance, including their daily caffeine fix. In 19th-century urban settings, immigrants were found pushing trolleys around the city, selling hot brew as a means to make a living in their new world. As you can imagine, the coffee was hot, strong, and straight-up. No designer flavors. No fancy foam patterns. No choice of regular, oat, almond, or skim milk. Fast-forward and today, coffee shops that offer an array of beverage choices have replaced mobile coffee vendors (with exceptions). With a little creativity, you can combine the convenience of coffee-on-the-go with coffee shop quality.

If you already have a cart in place, then you don’t have to figure out where to place it in your apartment. All you need to do is clean it up and restock it as a mini coffee shop. The star of the cart, of course, is the coffee maker. Whether you’re Keurig or Nespresso, is up to you … as long as it fits on the cart and does the job. Next, is the coffee, whether you use K-cups or beans. You’ll also need a variety of coffee mugs. You can find coffee mugs anywhere. Online, big box stores, home goods stores, or get creative and scour antique and thrift shops for vintage finds (including spoons) to add some variety. You’ll also need to deck out your cart with flavored syrups, sweeteners, and non-dairy coffee creamer. Add a stack of napkins, and you’re good to go. If your cart isn’t too heavy, you can wheel it to other rooms to serve guests.  Have some fun during the holidays and deck your cart out with ornaments, garlands, and fairy lights.

With a little imagination, you can make your defunct bar cart work for you as a coffee cart. You’ll be creating something functional and fun that requires little money and will bring you lots of joy.
