How to Adopt or Foster a Pet in Your Apartment

Adopting or fostering a pet in your apartment.

You’re all settled into your new apartment, but something is missing. Wouldn’t it be nice to share your space with another being? Even if you have a roommate, nothing is more rewarding than having a pet. Shelters are always looking for good permanent and foster homes for companion animals, and you might be a good fit. If you have the interest, time, and money, adding a pet to your apartment family can be richly rewarding.

Before you head to the local animal shelter, check your lease to make sure that residents can have pets. At some properties, you may be required to pay a pet deposit and a modest monthly rental fee. Some leases may have breed and/or weight restrictions as well. However, most contemporary apartment communities welcome pets and even offer pet-friendly amenities such as on-site dog parks and dog wash stations.

Pets aren’t cheap and require commitment. Make sure your budget can comfortably handle pet food, beds, toys, veterinary care, etc. And take a serious look at your lifestyle. If you are a frequent traveler, whether for work or pleasure, being a pet owner may not be realistic. But, if your lifestyle is conducive to pet ownership, then go online and start looking. It’s very easy to start the process online and you can make an appointment to meet and greet animals you’re interested in.

Once you and your potential pet have met and it’s a good match, then you start the screening process and pay an adoption fee which covers the shelter’s cost of caring for the animal. After you’ve brought your new pet home to your apartment, both of you will need some time to adjust. Don’t fret if your new dog or cat wants to hide under the bed or acts frightened or standoffish at first. Just be gentle and patient and it will come around. Other pets acclimate immediately and are thrilled to be in a new home with a loving caretaker.

If you’re not quite ready to become a full-time pet parent, consider fostering. When you agree to foster an animal, you take it into your home for a limited period or you can wait until a suitable forever home has been secured for the pet. Fostering is a great opportunity to figure out if pet ownership is right for you. Usually, the shelter will pay all of the animal’s expenses, such as food and veterinary care. Fostering also is a chance for pets to become socialized, so they will be well prepared when they go to their permanent home. In many cases, foster parents end up adopting the pet in their care.

Whether you decide to adopt or foster, having a pet at home can brighten your day, relieve stress, and bring much joy and fulfillment to your life. It’s also a great way to connect with others in your apartment community who have chosen to become a pet parent. Best of all you’re giving an animal an opportunity for a happier, healthier life.
