Tips for Staying Cool During a Heat Wave
The rollout of NFL swag and pumpkin spice may signal that September is approaching, but we’re still in the firm grasp of summer for several more weeks. Some of us may have experienced a few slightly cooler days, but don’t be fooled. In the Midwest, extreme heat and humidity can often hang around until early October. When it comes to heat waves, it’s not always the reading on the thermometer that matters. Factor in the humidity, and you can tack on as many as 10 extra degrees, due to the heat index. It could only be 85 degrees, but with humidity in the ‘70s, the “feel-like” temperature could easily range from 105-110 degrees.
It’s important to protect yourself during a heat wave. Here are a few tips:
If possible, limit outdoor activities to mornings and evenings. If you work outdoors, take frequent breaks in the shade and stay hydrated.
- Keep hydrated. Water and electrolyte drinks are preferred as beverages containing alcohol and caffeine have the opposite effect and can dehydrate you.
- Stay indoors in the AC. This is a great time to work on a hobby, catch up on your favorite Netflix show, or go to a matinee. And you have a perfect excuse to avoid housework and other boring chores!
- Don’t leave kids or pets in the car. This seems like common sense, but when you’re hot, tired, and frazzled, it’s easy to get sidetracked. Always double-check the back seat.
- Keep the sun out. Inside your apartment, close the blinds and drapes to keep sunlight out. Use your ceiling fans to circulate the cool air.
- Dress appropriately. Loose-fitting, light-colored clothes in breathable fabric like cotton will keep you cooler. And if you go outside, don’t forget the sunscreen and reapply as needed.
Prolonged exposure to excessive heat and humidity can cause serious health problems such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Watch for signs such as cramping, dizziness, and weakness. Get yourself (or the affected person) to shade or indoors and give them water or a sports drink. If they don’t improve, call 911.
By following a few common-sense suggestions, you can safely ride out the last throes of summer and look forward to sweater weather. The wind-down of summer is a great time to start researching your fantasy football draft and making plans for fall and the upcoming holiday season. Don’t sweat it.
